Healthy for Ramadan
The Health Promotion Centre (HPC) held a ‘Healthy for Ramadan’ event on Sunday (March 10) Held under the Happy Environment and Lifestyle (HEAL) programme. The event was attended by High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Brunei Darussalam Nahida Rahman Shumona as the guest of honour. There were health lectures on health guidelines and tips during the fasting month while creating a community that practices a healthy lifestyle while observing fasting rituals.

Protein Intake and Sleep Quality
In a recent study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers report that protein intake from plant sources may improve sleep quality. In contrast, increased animal protein intake worsens sleep quality. An adult requires seven to eight hours of sleep daily to reduce risk of chronic diseases and mortality. Poor diet quality, characterized by a higher intake of saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, and processed foods, can impair sleep quality and duration.

Nigeria - 55,000 licensed doctors in Nigeria
In the last five years, the country lost about 15,000 to 16,000 doctors to the Japa syndrome while about 17,000 had been transferred. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Ali Pate, said the brain drain syndrome has robbed the health sector of its best hands. Pate said the government is doing its best to expand the training scheme and motivate others who chose to stay back and serve their fatherland.

World Food Safety Day - Prepare for the Unexpected
World Health Organization (WHO) is to create a network to help countries with surveillance of foodborne diseases. The first meeting of the WHO Alliance for Food Safety is scheduled in Geneva, Switzerland, in May with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Disease (DFWED). Countries committed to advance food safety through five priorities and adopted targets to guide action.

Rotary International President, Gordon Mclnally, Gives $7m to Nigeria
Gordon Mclnally was on a three-day working visit to Nigeria since Friday. He had earlier donated $14m through the World Health Organisation to Nigeria. It stated that there were indications that he might have an audience with President Bola Tinubu on other areas of assistance on disease control, and child and maternal health. Nigeria was also an awardee of Rotary’s $2m grant for the improvement of Maternal and Child Health.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) - A Review
In a recent study published in the journal Nutrients, researchers from Spain investigated the influence of aromatic herbs and spices in the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) on the glycemic profiles of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). They found that black cumin, cinnamon, ginger, curcumin, and saffron significantly lowered fasting blood glucose levels in T2DM patients. Other risk factors, including genetics, metabolism, and the environment, influence the disease.
