Scientists are harnessing cells to make new types of materials that can grow, repair themselves and even respond to their environment. These solid “engineered living materials” are made by embedding cells in an inanimate matrix that’s formed in a desired shape. They have 3D printed a bioink containing plant cells that were then genetically modified. Applications could someday include biomanufacturing and sustainable construction.

In the heart of sun-soaked Morocco, scientists are cultivating a future where tough crops defy a relentless drought. Cultivated areas across Morocco are expected to shrink to 2.5 million hectares in 2024 compared with 3.7 million last year, with cereal yields more than halving to 25 million quintals (2.5 million tonnes)

Equity and inclusion are important issues for any teacher, but they can be particularly important in subjects like chemistry. There are many benefits that derive from diversifying participation in STEM, including economic prosperity, global sustainability, active citizenship, social mobility and social justice. The challenge for chemistry is exacerbated by declining chemistry undergraduate recruitment and low rates of retention among chemistry teachers and researchers.

PNNL scientists are part of a national consortium creating the first molecular map of such effects. They aim to uncover, at the smallest scales, the impacts of exercise on humans and other mammals by investigating the effects of exercise. The consortium’s biomolecular analysis centers use an omics approach to analyze genes, proteins, or other biomolecules at a whole-body level.

The farther away galaxies are, the faster they are moving, to the point that they seem to be moving at nearly the speed of light. Our finding suggests that, on those very scales, Einstein's theory may also be insufficient," said Niayesh Afshordi, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Waterloo.

Water and ethanol molecules, and the way the cluster together at different temperatures, impact the flavour profile of alcoholic drinks. In the first stages of their research, the scientists measured the surface tension of different alcohol types. They would then increase the ABV of the drinks, and studied changes in their clusters at different alcohol levels and temperatures.
