Health and Disability Commission: A Woman Gets a Hysterectomy Without Consent
The Health and Disability Commissioner said the woman agreed to a hysterectomy due to pelvic organ prolapse six months prior. But the surgery - done in 2014 at a public hospital which the report did not name - was changed just prior to the woman entering the operating theatre. The woman had already been premedicated when she signed a consent form agreeing to get an implant made of surgical mesh instead.

South Korea: Doctors' Strike Causes Surgery Cancellations, Long Wait Times and Delays Treatments
The strike has led to surgery cancellations, long wait times and delayed treatments at major hospitals. The walkout, which started February 20, is over government plans to sharply increase the number of doctors. Nearly 12,000 junior doctors -- 93 percent of the trainee workforce -- were not in their hospitals at the last count.

Nutrition and Alzheimer's Disease
In a recent cross-sectional study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, researchers used data from 266 participants along the cognitive impairment spectrum to investigate the association between nutrition and cognitive decline. Their study reveals that nutrition-related variables such as body composition and dietary patterns are significantly associated with the onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD), with malnutrition substantially increasing AD risk. An unfortunate side-effect of this achievement, however, is a slowly aging world.

Hospital Overcrowding in Limerick
In January, more than 11,000 people marched in Limerick against hospital overcrowding. Health Minister Cho Kyoo-hong said the government will take lenient measures if trainee doctors return before administrative procedures are completed. Cho made the remark as some 93 percent of the 13,000 junior doctors have been absent from their worksites for three weeks, in a prolonged labor action against the government's proposal to increase medical school enrollments by 2,000 next year.
