Bioluminescence in the Deep Ocean
Bioluminescence evolved in the sea about 540 million years ago. For animals, especially those that live in parts of the oceans that are deeper than sunlight can reach, bioluminescent can make the difference between life and death. Scientists are still working to understand the full scope of the phenomenon’s importance.

Science Fair in Mancos
Brady Archer was awarded the Colorado Association of Science Teacher’s award and the Doug Steward Memorial award for his accomplishments at the state science fair. This year, seven middle school student and one high school student competed at the State level. The last grand award was Cuinn Archer, who built an automatic plant waterer that he designed and made with a 3D printed.

The Origin of Bioluminescence in Octocorals
Bioluminescence is abundant in marine life including in fish, corals, jellyfish and crustaceans. On land, the phenomenon is found in many animals including fireflies, beetles, mushrooms, algae and some bacteria. Scientists believe that life evolved bioluminescent to aid in communication, courtship, predation, and as a means of camouflage.

The First Animal That Glows in the Dark
In a new study, scientists report that deep-sea corals that lived 540 million years ago may have been the first animals to glow, far earlier than previously thought. Today, marine creatures that glimmer include some fish, squid, octopuses, jellyfish, even sharks. For corals, scientists aren't sure if this luminous reaction is meant to attract or repel other organisms, or perhaps both.

Chadron High School Science Club
Chadron High School’s newest club, the Science Club, competed at their first ever Science Olympiad on April 9 in Ogallala. Hina Hinman took first place in Forensics, Sammi Brodrick and Hinman placing second in Fermi Questions, Emmerson Landreth and Lillie Uhing placing third in Write it, Do it. The club is open to any high school student with a current roster of nine.

Iran’s Air Defense System Hits Esfahan Air Base
The Institute acquired two high-resolution Airbus Pleiades Neo satellite images of Iran’s Eighth Shekari Air Base. The attack shows the capability of Israeli stand-off weapons to target deep inside Iran, evading detection and air defenses. An Israeli official announced that the second missile was deliberately destroyed by the Israeli Air Force after the first successfully hit the target.
