Could It Be a Gray Whale?
New England Aquarium researchers were conducting a regular survey of the waters south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in Massachusetts. What they spotted, a whale without a dorsal fin, led the researchers to think that it might be a North Atlantic right whale. But the whale’s skin was blotchy, and if it were a right whale, something would have been wrong.

Irish Research and Innovation - The Irish Research Council
Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) was founded in 2000 by then tánaiste Mary Harney to aggressively evolve basic and applied research into twin foundations for the Irish economy. Information Science at Cornell University
In the last 10 years, the number of students in information science has grown 524 percent, according to data from Cornell Institutional Research and Planning. However, students have felt the department’s growing pains, struggling to enroll in core courses and access help in overflowing office hours. In the 2022-23 academic year, just two core courses could have been fulfilled in the spring, compared to all five in the fall semester.

Listeria Monocytogenes in Pork and Poultry Meat
Listeria monocytogenes was the top Listeria type found in chicken, quail, and pork meat, while Listeria innocua and Listeria welshimeri were the predominant species in duck and turkey meat. In 30 of 45 samples, more than one species of Listeria was identified. Of 59 Listeria strains, 33 were multi-drug resistant.

Prenatal Medicine - Scientists Grow Mini-Organs From Cells in the Womb
Scientists from University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospital in the United Kingdom collected cells from amniotic fluid samples taken during 12 pregnancies. They envision their approach could eventually help doctors monitor and treat congenital conditions before birth. In the U.K., the legal limit for terminating a pregnancy is generally 22 weeks after conception.

Climate Change - The Warmest February on Record
Global sea surface temperatures are also at their highest ever recorded, data from the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service shows. The data shows February was 1.77C warmer than the pre-industrial average for the month, from 1850-1900, and 0.81C above 1991-2020 levels. And the global average temperature for the past 12 months – between March 2023 and February 2024 – is the highest on record.

New Images of the Odysseus Spacecraft on the Moon
The pictures, along with huge amounts of data, have been downloaded just hours before night falls at the lunar south pole. Intuitive Machines, the US company behind the mission, said it will now be possible to reconstruct the landing to understand how Odysseus came to rest on its side. The big unknown is whether the batteries and electronics can survive temperatures that dip below -200C (-328F)
