A New Approach to Machine Learning
A team of computer scientists has created a nimbler, more flexible type of machine learning model. The new research marks “a significant advance in the field,” an AI engineer said. Each “neuron” in the network is a mathematical function that receives signals from other such neurons, runs some calculations and sends signals on through multiple layers of neurons.

Climate Change - A New World
In late 2023 the United States government released its Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA) The NCA contends with two truths that are increasingly being reckoned with in U.S. popular and academic conversations. The first is that climate change has the potential to exacerbate health, social and economic outcomes for Black, Indigenous, people of colour (BIPOC) and low-income communities. the second is that social systems and institutions — including governmental, cultural, spiritual and economic structures — are the only places where adaptation and

What Scientists Want to Know About the 2019 Total Solar Eclipse
On April 8, the moon will photobomb our view of the sun, creating a rare total solar eclipse that will be seen in Mexico, across the eastern half of the United States and as far north as Newfoundland, Canada. Some of the projects enlist the help of eclipse viewers, including you. The sudden darkness affects animal behavior, including humans who know it’s coming. It affects chemical reactions around us and what we can see in space.

The Search For Magnetic Monopoles
Scientists from the U.K. and China have found emergent magnetic monopole behavior in a hematite, an iron-oxide component of rust. This doesn’t prove whether or not magnetic poles can be truly separated, it could open the door to new data storage and computing technologies. In classical physics, it’s impossible to actually create a magnet, but the revolution of quantum mechanics in the early 20th century began to unravel that long-established assumption.

Animal Behavior During a Solar Eclipse
Researchers will be standing by to observe how animals’ routines at the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas are disrupted when skies dim on April 8. They previously detected other strange animal behaviors in 2017 at a South Carolina zoo that was in the path of total darkness. The cause of the behavior is still unclear.

Dark Matter Could Be viewed As an Alternative Universe
The new paper by Dr. Arushi Bodas, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago’s Enrico Fermi Institute, states that dark matter could and possibly should be viewed as a distorted alternate universe that never fully developed. But before discussing the paper, it’s important to understand just how mysterious dark matter really is. It’s inferred because the behavior of stars, planets, and galaxies would be wholly inexplicable without its presence.

The US-ELTP Thirty Meter Telescope and the TMT
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is facing pressure to go forward with only one telescope. This is because of how utterly huge they're meant to be, both are equally important and both are actually supposed to work together to fulfill a wide-eyed dream for astronomers. In terms of cost, however, the projected amount is just about symmetrical to the GMT. The NSF, in total, will get $9.06 billion to work with.

Climate Disinformation and Propaganda Can Be Dangerous - But That Don’t Mean People Are Helpless
Climate disinformation and propaganda can be dangerous, but that doesn’t mean people are helpless. This is an excerpt from our weekly environmental newsletter Future Proof. In 2023, an American speaker came to New Zealand to talk about methane emissions in New Zealand, which are a major portion of our carbon emissions.
