Kern County STEM Science Fair
Hundreds of fourth—through twelve-grade students gathered Tuesday morning at the Mechanics Bank Convention Center to showcase their STEM science projects. With over 400 projects, each project, students spent months working through their school and district rank for a chance to compete at the state level. The public is invited to see the projects up close and talk to students from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Early Self-Recognition in Babies
The University of Texas at Austin found babies who were prompted to touch their own faces developed self-recognition earlier than those who did not. The research was published this month in the journal Current Biology. This suggests that babies pulling on their toes or tapping their fingers are not just playing.

What Is EHS?
In most cases, these parasomnias are normal and harmless, except when physical danger or pain is involved. In one study, only 11 percent had reported EHS to a professional, and only eight percent of patients with recurring episodes sought prevention. In the worst-case scenario, EHS with pain could be a sign of the more dangerous and deadly brain hemorrhage.

Climate-Smart Marine Spatial Planning
In a paper published March 12 in npj Ocean Sustainability, the researchers outlined guidelines to support marine managers and planners on how to develop climate-smart ocean plans and put them into action. The guidelines come at a critical time as UNESCO and the European Commission jointly launched a global marine spatial planning roadmap. All are deeply interrelated and believed to function best as a coherent whole.

Scientists discover 100 potential new deep-sea species, including one starlike creature. The expedition team focused its investigation on the 500-mile (800-kilometer) long Bounty Trough off the coast of New Zealand, east of South Island. They collected almost 1,800 samples from depths as far down as 3 miles (4,800 meters), finding species of fish, squid, mollusk and coral.
