The Enviro-Champs in South Africa
Enviro-Champs is a group of 15 citizen scientists in KwaZulu-Natal province. Their community water monitoring programme has managed to prevent raw sewage from flooding into rivers. By 2021, similar intiatives had started up in other parts of South Africa.

The 'Missing Link'
Palaeontologists, it was thought, hadn’t found, nor would they ever find, the so-called ‘missing link’. In 1908, amateur antiquarian Charles Dawson claimed to have unearthed a candidate fossil cranium at a gravel-pit near Piltdown in Sussex. Further excavations, by him and Arthur Smith Woodward of the British Museum, produced an ape-like jawbone and crude tools.

Students from schools across Ireland participated in the 2023/2024 mini Scientist competition. The event marked the culmination of a nationwide competition that began in September 2023. This year, over 6,800 students from 94 schools in 18 counties participated.

Can a Soft Adhesive Patch Help With Vocal Dysfunction?
researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles built a soft adhesive patch that they say can turn throat movements into speech. It converts the motion of users’ larynx into electrical signals and these signals are processed by a machine learning algorithm that will use them to generate speech, according to a paper published in Nature Communications. The patch works with an accuracy of up to 94.68 per cent.
