Pope Francis: Indigenous Peoples and the Work and Research in the Sciences
Pope Francis said the entire patrimony of human knowledge should be employed as a means of overcoming conflicts in a nonviolent manner and combating poverty and the new forms of slavery. The Pontifical Academies of Sciences and of Social Sciences jointly sponsored a workshop March 14-15 on the knowledge of Indigenous peoples.

Goddard Space Science Symposium
The 61st annual Goddard Space Science Symposium will take place March 20-22, 2024, at the Brendan Iribe Center on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. The symposium will also be streamed online. The theme of this year’s event – “Space 2040: Pathways to the Future” – leverages NASA’s plans for the coming decades.

Katalin Karikó Receives the 2023 Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest
Katalin Karikó has been selected by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego as the 2023 winner of the Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest. She is best known for her research on messenger RNA — the genetic material that tells our bodies how to make proteins — and the development of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. The public is invited to attend the award ceremony and a presentation.

Artificial Intelligence to Train a Dog-like Robot for Parkour

Maine Big Night
Maine Big Night is a community science nonprofit founded by UMaine Ph.D. candidate Greg LeClair. The project has recorded more than 21,000 amphibians at 349 locations across Maine from Kittery to Fort Kent. Volunteers may join a certified person’s monitoring site without additional training.

Immunomodulatory Multicellular Scaffolds for Tendon-To-Bone Regeneration
a research group led by Prof. Wu Chengtie from the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed a multicellular scaffold based on inorganic bioceramics to achieve immunomodulation and integrated regeneration in tendon-to-bone injuries. Restriction of motor activity due to loss of natural structure is a major cause of decreased life quality.

The Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences is holding a workshop to explore how the knowledge of aboriginal communities and the scientific world can, together, meet major global challenges.
