The Hubble Space Telescope Looks at Jupiter
The Hubble Space Telescope looked at Jupiter on January 5-6, 2024. It captured both sides of the planet as it was shrouded in clouds and haze stirred up by violent winds. Nasa said that this anticyclone was the result of storms merging in 1998 and 2000, and it first appeared red in 2006.

Live Cell Imaging
Live cell imaging allows researchers to follow processes as they occur, such as this differential interference contrast (DIC) still image of an amoeba digesting algae within their food vacuoles. Through time-lapse microscopy, scientists track proteins, organelles, individual cells, or cell populations during dynamic processes. This technique is simple to employ, but does not exist in isolation.

Pi Day - The First Three Digits of an Infinite Number
Pi Day is a mathematical constant that expresses the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. It is part of many formulas used in physics, astronomy, engineering and other fields, dating back thousands of years to ancient Egypt, Babylon and China. Climate Change and Traditional Knowledge in the Pacific
Traditional knowledge in the Pacific explains the causes and manifestations of natural phenomena, and identifies the best ways to respond. Many Pacific Island communities believe a cloudless, dark blue sky signals the arrival of a tropical cyclone. In Tonga, when the frigate bird flies across the land — unusual behaviour for an ocean species — it signals an imminent arrival of heavy rain. The south wind (tu’upolu) is most feared.

Solar Panels in the Eyes Could Restore Vision
Scientists from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney are currently exploring an innovative method to restore sight in people suffering from incurable eye diseases. Their research focuses on implanting tiny solar panels directly into the eyes. They are designed to interact with the nervous system to restore lost functions. Another well-known example is the cochlear implant which stimulates the auditory nerve to improve hearing in people with severe deafness.

Coral Bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef
Australian researchers have found coral bleaching around six islands in the far northern parts of the Great Barrier Reef. Scientists at the James Cook University said on March 15 they found only a few relatively healthy areas, mostly in deeper waters. Bleaching is triggered by warmer ocean waters, which cause corals to expel the colourful algae living in their tissues.
