The Doctor of Audiology program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has climbed into the top 25 of audiology programs nationwide, ranking No. 22 in the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools list for 2024. The AuD program moved up four spots from its previous ranking of No. 26 in the nation. Since 2013, the program has had 100% job placement among graduates.

Purdue University graduate dietetics program integrated new technology to enhance dietitians’-in-training early experience in working one-on-one with clients who are wanting to improve their health via dietary changes. The program used $40,000 of a $90,500 instructional equipment grant from the purdue College of Health and Human Sciences to purchase new video cameras, microphones, cordless earpieces and other tools. This hardware has been paired with new audio/video recording software called VALT.

Students creatively used humanities and social science research to design a game world set in an imagined future shaped by AI. Professor of History John Monroe led the competition along with Kelli Fitzpatrick, graduate student in the Department of English. The competition awarded a first prize of $750, a second prize of $250, and an honorable mention.

La Jolla Institute for Immunology (LJI) has won funding through the Prebys Foundation’s “Prebys Research Heroes” Program. The program celebrates female scientists pursuing “high-risk, high-reward” research projects. LJI scientists study the immune system from every angle. This research is an important step in developing vaccines and life-saving therapies against ovarian cancer.

Five Stanford undergraduates have been awarded the 2024 Barry Goldwater Scholarship. This year’s recipients are Julie Chen, Cyrus Hajian, Jaeah Kim, Andrei Mandelshtam, and Sidra Xu. Each Goldwater Scholar receives a sum equal to the cost of tuition, mandatory fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Sarah Teichmann started a group at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology in 2001 and became an MRC program leader in 2006. This year, 12 graduate students and four undergraduates at UNC-Chapel Hill received fellowships from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Their research covers several STEM-related fields, including biology, sociology, genetics and anthropology. This fellowship is the oldest of its kind directly supporting graduate students in STEM.
