In light of worsening mental health among youth, strategies have been implemented to improve access to behavioral health services. However, challenges such as funding and workforce shortages often hinder implementation and sustainability of these services. Medicaid provides significant financing for the delivery of these school services and provides coverage to approximately 4 in 10 children nationwide. This issue brief explores the implementation of these provisions from the Safer Communities Act thus far, with a focus on the guidance issued from CMS.

Together, we built one of the best and most accessible models of how many days each year people experience health-threatening heat. The HHS daily physical activity recommendations only account for about two percent of daily waking hours, leaving the remaining 98 percent of the time for sedentary activity. The best recommendation is “the more, the better,” said John Pentikis, ergonomics branch manager at DHA-PH. This nonexercise activity best serves as a supplement to moderate or vigorous physical activity but can substantially benefit health due to its potential to improve heart health.

The interactive map, called HeatRisk, appears on websites for the National Weather Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Users can scroll through to look at current heat conditions, as well as a forecast for the next several days. The map is color-coded to show the risk of heat-related health impacts. It comes the same day the CDC put out new guidance for clinicians.

Construction for the campus is expected to begin this summer and it is scheduled to open in summer 2025. Funding for the project was approved during the 88th Legislative Session by Abbott. The law also provides an additional $5 million for the facility’s first year of operation to support critical services to those in need.
