Marquette University Receives $1.5 Million Gift From Bob and Kim Eck
Marquette receives $1.5 million gift to fund College of Health Sciences research and future expansion of Athletic and Human Performance Research Center April 23, 2024 MILWAUKEE. The Eck family will provide seed funding and focus on highly innovative projects aimed at applying new technologies, novel therapies and research to help address substance abuse disorders. In addition, a portion of the gift will support a new men’s basketball practice facility.

On Saturday, First Lady Jill Biden toured labs and met with researchers at the Ludeman Family Center for Women’s Health Research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Biden was part of the recently announced White House Initiative on women’s health research, which is unlocking federal funding for women's health and sex differences research.

KU School of Medicine-Salina Medical Outreach
Earlier this academic year, four third-year KU School of Medicine-Salina students traveled to Lima, Peru, where they volunteered at Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru. CASP serves a community of people with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome and other developmental delays. The Salina Student Medical Outreach group raised money for the trip.

OSHA Cites Hanover Foods for exposing Workers to dozens of Safety and Health Hazards
Department of Labor again finds Hanover Foods Corp. in violation of dozens of safety and health hazards at its Centre Hall facility. OSHA cited the company for 70 violations, including nine repeat, 51 serious and 11 other-than-serious violations. Workers in the U.S. suffer more than 190,000 illnesses and approximately 50,000 deaths annually related to chemical exposures.

Vermont's First Confirmed Measles Case
The case is in a person in Vermont who is part of an international group program. It’s the state’s first confirmed case of measles since 2018. The Health Department says it was informed on April 10 by the Georgia State Public Health Department that the group had been exposed to a traveler. There’s no treatment but health officials say it’s almost entirely preventable with a vaccine.

Elgin Township 708 Mental Health Board’s request to levy taxes for mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services has been blocked by the Kane County Clerk’s Office for second time in four years. a bill currently pending in the General Assembly would correct the problem but is not expected to pass in time it will affect this year’s levying. As result, the maximum the government can collect is $80,000, Bruderle said.

The Supreme Court Will Decide If Doctors Can Provide Abortion to Pregnant Women With Medical Emergency
The Supreme Court will hear arguments Wednesday in a case that could determine whether doctors can provide abortions to pregnant women with medical emergencies in states that enact abortion bans. The federal law, called the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, requires doctors to stabilize or treat any patient who shows up at an emergency room. Simply put, EMTALA requires emergency rooms to offer a medical exam if you present at their facility.
