New Technology Helps Archaeologists Explore the Past

A three-dimensional model of a hidden burial chamber in Naples, Italy, was made by researchers using particle physics. It was discovered in 1981, the old-fashioned way, by digging. Now, archeologists are trading their pickaxes for subatomic particle detectors. The detector tracks and counts muons passing through the structure.
