Japan’s Antarctic expeditions have been conducting scientific research on the continent. It is hoped that by elucidating the mechanism by which the ice sheets are melting, we will become able to predict future sea level rises and climate change. This is because the majority of Antarctica’s ice lies in East Antarctica.
