Debris from the former Naval base can be seen in late February along the heavily eroded stretch of Hatteras Island beach. Officials said the contaminated soils were likely exposed by beach erosion near the former site of Naval Facility Cape Hattersas. The beach in this area has remained closed since the issuance of the precautionary public health advisory.
