Andy Rooney was the poster child of the scoldy-oldie commentator. He wore the mask of the not-quite-getting-it elder man, the better to gently knit his Greatest-Generation eyebrows and tut-tut. The local affiliates and the UHF stations had to pad their broadcast hours.
