Copernicus: Earth Sets New High Temperature Record
For the ninth straight month, Earth has obliterated global heat records. February, the winter as a whole and the world’s oceans setting new high-temperature marks, according to Copernicus. This was the warmest winter — December, January and February — by nearly a quarter of a degree, beating 2016.

Vaccines for COVID-19 Boost Immune Responses Using Nanoparticles
A team of MIT researchers has now shown that a type of nanoparticle called a metal-organic framework (MOF) can also provoke a strong immune response by activating the innate immune system. In a study of mice, the researchers showed that this MOF could successfully encapsulate and deliver part of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein while also acting as an adjuvant once the MOF is broken down inside cells.

Sorghum SbGhd7 Regulates Flowering
Brookhaven National Laboratory and Oklahoma State University have identified key genes and the mechanism by which they control flowering in sorghum, an important bioenergy crop. The findings, just published in the journal New Phytologist, suggest strategies to delay flowering to maximize plant growth and the amount of biomass available for generating biofuels.

A Novel In vivo System to Study Coral Biomineralization in the Starlet Sea Anemone
The soft-bodied sea anemone does not produce reef-forming rocky skeletons on its own, but was induced to produce protein. It turns it into a good model system for studying coral polyps in the lab. Scientists are racing to develop ways to stave off collapse.

GPT-4 and ChatGPT in the Biomedical Sciences
GPT-4 answers to questions that required interpretation of experimental data were long, excessively wordy, and often included accurate but unrequested information. In our study, students observed instances of detailed model hallucinations of scientific figures with realistic summative interpretation of these results. The Advanced Virology exam contained 7 of 13 questions based on interpretation of figures and GPT4-Expert received the highest marks. This result presents a potential limitation in our approach of providing the model’s ability to generate correct answers to scientific questions

A New Frontier in Forensic Science - Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
Space presents a unique and harsh environment for forensic investigations. The thought of gravity in space immediately conjures images of astronauts hauntingly suspended in the void of space or floating gymnastics in the International Space Station (ISS). However, true zero gravity exists far away from any celestial bodies. For a forensic science discipline, gravity plays a critical role in how airborne liquid blood interacts with a surface and creates stain patterns.
