Minority Health Month is a time to raise awareness about racial and ethnic health disparities faced across the United States. According to the Arkansas Department of Health, non-White communities in the state face higher rates of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Factors such as socioeconomic status, limited access to health care facilities, cultural barriers and systemic inequalities contribute to these disparities. Frank Lowman is the first UF Health patient to meet the criteria to receive extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. As a result, Lowman survived cardiac arrest, he also had no lingering neurological or physical damage. In March 2023, the prehospital ECPR program went online. Lowman suffered a heart attack that caused his heart to stop.

Golomb and colleagues have pressed Sutter Health to increase its safety measures. Sutter claims it has spent nearly $40 million to improve security for the unit where Golomb was attacked. A security officer is now stationed on the unit during the day.

Tufts Medicine and Acadia Healthcare Break Ground on the Construction of a new 144-bed behavioral health hospital in Malden, Massachusetts, with an anticipated opening in Fall of 2025. The event occurred on the site of the new hospital located at 100 Hospital Road. MelroseWakefield Hospital and Lawrence Memorial Hospital have been known and highly respected for the inpatient behavioral healthcare services that they provide in their respective communities.

In Europe, an incidence of 1.12 million cases of stroke was estimated in 2017, and a 30-years projection has predicted an increase in the numbers of stroke events and stroke survivors2. A survey by KFF, a health policy research group, released Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, shows 60% of Black patients said they prepare for insults or feel they have to be careful about their appearance. That’s similar to the rate for Hispanic and Alaska Native patients – and nearly double the rates for white patients. Nearly 30% of Black respondents prepare to be insulted, also about double the rate of white patients.

Milton S. Hershey Medical Center appointed Dr. Robert Harbaugh to the position of chief medical officer, March 25. He has served in the role on an interim basis since April 2023. Harbinaugh will also continue to support outpatient practices affiliated with Milton S Hersh Medical Center.
