The Evolution of Humans After Toba
Scientists found tiny bits of volcanic glass from Toba buried alongside ancient arrowheads and fossilized remains of animals that were bygone meals. In the new study, scientists found that humans shifted their diets in the extremely arid conditions that followed the eruption in the lowlands of Ethiopia. They found the eggs were beyond the range of reliable carbon dating — more than 45,000 years old.

Russia’s Assault on Ukraine Destroys Ukraine’s Scientific Infrastructure
Since the war began in February 2022, the conflict has damaged or destroyed 1,443 science-related buildings and over 750 pieces of essential scientific equipment. Repairing the damage will cost Ukraine $1.26 billion, a majority of which must go toward restoring universities. In addition to causing infrastructure damage, the war has led to a diversion of scientific funding. The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has had its budget halved by the government since 2021.

Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB) - The Future of Solar Radiation Modification
Marine cloud brightening (MCB) is one of two primary solar radiation modification methods being proposed to offset the worst effects of global warming while decarbonization advances. MCB proposals involve the injection of salt spray into shallow marine clouds to brighten them, increasing their reflection of sunlight and reducing the amount of heat absorbed by the water below. A group of 31 leading atmospheric scientists are now offering a consensus physical science research roadmap.

ConnectIT: Bridging the Gap Between Education and Technology
Students are programming robots to help K–12 schools. Some schools are taking the lessons further, having students work on simulated or real IT equipment to teach them technology skills. Other schools might work with the computer science teacher to build the program from the ground up.

Mars Volcano - A New Giant Volcano on Mars
Noctis Labyrinthus is a volcanic witness to most of the Red Planet’s multi-billion-year history. It is almost 30,000 feet tall (a little higher that Everest) and perhaps 280 miles long at its base. The work has yet to be peer-reviewed, but those who saw the presentation are skeptical.

CAREER Award Winners: Doug Brinkerhoff, Beverly Piggott and Doug Brinkerhoff
Doug Brinkerhoff is the most recent University of Montana researchers to earn awards from the National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development Program. He uses computer code to model the behavior of ice sheets. It’s hard to predict how fast ice will slide over the hidden material it rests upon. But it’s also expensive running these ice sheet models.
