The network was designed by engineers from the University of Strathclyde’s Software Defined Radio team (StrathSDR) and spin out company Neutral Wireless. A research paper detailing how the private network was deployed along The Mall won the Best Paper Award at the 2024 NAB Broadcast Engineering and Information Technology Conference in Las Vegas on April 13. The project, which delivered the world’s largest temporary private 5G standalone network to connect cameras, also won an IABM Broadcast and Media award.

In a recent paper published in the journal ACS Energy Letters, researchers from the Anhui Agricultural University and Guangxi University developed a semipermeable membrane capable of harnessing this osmotic energy from salt gradients to generate electricity. In laboratory tests, the new membrane's output power density was more than double that of existing commercial products.
