The Central government has notified the Citizenship Act, 2019 (CAA) rules, according to which a Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan can now seek Indian citizenship without producing a valid passport. The CAA led to widespread protests across the country in 2019-20, is also under challenge before the Supreme Court.
