There are 340,000 fewer accountants than five years ago, according to a Bloomberg analysis of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of candidates taking the CPA exam is the lowest since 2006. Businesses large and small are feeling the effects. Some of these, like the perception that accounting is boring or the fact that the field has lower starting salaries than finance or tech, are potentially part of the problem.
