Shanna Shaffer developed double pneumonia, acute respiratory distress and severe sepsis. In December 2022, Shaffer and her husband, Tim, both caught the flu. The two ended up in the emergency room at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Doctors said her only chance for survival was ECMO.
