Virginia Environmental Endowment pleaded no contest to 940 criminal violations of the Freedom of Information Act and the Clean Water Act. Allied Chemical was made to pay more than $13 million in a one-of-a-kind legal settlement. In 1975, workers for a small Hopewell chemical company dumped the harmful pesticide into Hopewell’s waterways. The company’s true name was chlordecone.
