Angiosperms, better known as flowering plants, evolved 150 million years ago. Their rise helped more recent ants survive, while changing conditions drove earlier forms to extinction. Today, there are an estimated 2.5 million “modern” ants for each person on the planet. They play important roles as seed dispersers, decomposers, predators, and prey to many other animals.
