1860 marked a turning point, with the first international chemistry conference deciding that the elements should be arranged by atomic weight. That’s the average weight of all the protons and neutrons in all the known isotopes, or forms, of that element. In Germany, Lothar Meyer came up with the same table at the same time as Mendeleev, but was beaten to the publication punch by just a few months.
