Trillions of noisy, red-eyed insects called cicadas are emerging from the earth. The United States is home to 15 cicada broods, and in most years at least one of them emerges. This spring, Brood XIX, known as the Great Southern Brooch, and Northern Illinois Brooch are emerging simultaneously.
