elusive ‘ghost particles’ were detected by the IceCube Neutrino observatory in Antarctica, which is a detector the size of a cubic kilometre made up of ice. Tau neutrinos are tiny subatomic particles that interact very rarely with other matter, allowing them to travel astronomical distances undisturbed. Once detected, the particles can be traced back to their sources, revealing information about the conditions in which they were formed.
