In 2012, the UN Human Rights Council acknowledged that neglecting noma is affected may amount to a violation of basic child rights. In Nigeria, it is estimated that there are 4.1 to 17.9 cases of noma per 1000 children aged between one and 16 years with most cases in North-West and North-East regions, making it one of the highest reported cases globally.
