A federal study from 2016 predicted a national shortage of nearly 5,000 providers by 2025. Given the challenges of long standing financial difficulties, a lack of incoming OBGYNs could be the final straw for some maternal care units. In the 15 months since Idaho has put some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation into effect, the state has lost 22% of its practicing obstetricians.
