In 2021, for the second year, more people died from gun incidents than in any year on record, according to a Johns Hopkins University analysis of CDC data. It’s no secret that many strategies proposed today — from school metal detectors to enhanced policing, to the optimal timing and manner of safely storing guns — have limited scientific ballast because of a lack of preventive know-how. With growing interest in the field, the torch has passed to the next generation.
