Epileptic “fits” or “seizures” occur as a result of an occasional, sudden, excessive electrical discharge from cells in the brain. The causes include brain damage from prenatal or perinatal causes, congenital abnormalities or genetic conditions with associated brain malformations, a severe head injury, stroke that restricts the amount of oxygen to the brain, an infection of the brain such as meningitis and brain tumour.
