The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved the first treatment for alkaptonuria, a drug called nitisinone. The drug was not new; it had been used for many years to treat another condition (hereditary tyrosinemia type I) The repurposing of drugs is the use of therapies already approved for other diseases to treat new ailments, something the European Union plans to promote with the legislative reform it is carrying out.
