Community Health Worker Programs to Improve Health Care Equitably

Community health workers are frontline public health workers who share demographic characteristics and/or lived experiences with the patients they work with Programs with these workers have been shown to be effective toward improving health equity, but challenges in payment, financing have limited implementation Recent federal ruling allows for Medicare reimbursement of community health workers, thus opening the opportunity for wide-scale implementation. In the U.S., many minority populations have deeply rooted distrust of the medical system due to historical and ongoing barriers to high-quality care.
