Whitehall has recorded a significant increase in sickness absence, reaching a ten-year peak with an average of 8.1 days lost per staff member last year. Notably, mental ill health emerged as the primary cause of nearly half of the long-term sickness absences. This uptick in absenteeism is echoed by the civil service satisfaction survey's findings, which show a worrying increase in anxiety levels among staff.
