The Brooklyn artist’s recent paintings are inspired by cadaver monuments, memorial sculptures that emerged in Europe in the Late Middle Ages. The statues portrayed the departed’s forsaken bodies as rotting into skeletal remains — while their souls, presumably, achieved immortality.
