The lack of diversity in the economics profession has been highlighted as an issue by the Royal Economics Society (RES) Its 2023 report shows that 8.4% of students starting an economics degree at university are black, compared to four per cent of the population. In 2018, of those who passed the initial online test for the Government Economic Service’s fast stream programme, only eight per cent ethnic minority candidates ended up receiving a job offer.
