The population on the African continent will have nearly doubled by 2050, according to UN projections. Many policies to create new employment at mass scale focus on solutions that have worked elsewhere, often outside Africa. Few policies directly support homegrown solutions that already have a track record of creating large-scale stable employment. We found that these businesses do this in part because it generates an informal welfare system.
