Curiosity Explores a New Region of Mars
Curiosity is getting a new look into that more Earth-like past as it drives along and eventually crosses the Gediz Vallis channel. The formation’s sides are steep enough that the team doesn’t think the channel was made by wind. Scientists are also eager to learn whether this material was transported by debris flows or dry avalanches.

These scientists have used a chain of atoms in a single file to simulate the event horizon of a black hole. The phenomenon can be described as particles born from disturbances in the quantum fluctuations caused by the black hole's break in spacetime.

A REMARKABLE DISCOVERY In October 1923, American astronomer Edwin Hubble used the 100-inch telescope on the Mount Wilson Observatory in California to detect a star that changed its brightness in a fuzzy cloud. This meant that all 25 stars were located roughly at the same distance from us, allowing her to identify their brightness relative to each other. Today, we know that there are more than a hundred billion galaxies in the known universe.
