A Mechanism of Lysosomal Calcium Entry
Scientists have known how lysosomes release their calcium since their discovery in the 1950s by Christian René de Duve. The protein may serve as a potential drug target for modulating lysesosomal function and mitigating disease pathology at the heart of several common neurodegenerative disorders.

Postdoctoral Fellows in Biomedical Fields Are Increasingly Important
The number of postdoctoral fellows supported by NIH grants has been steadily falling for more than 20 years, with a significant dip after 2020. The problem is that postdocs are a critical component of the research and development workforce. By using mRNA vaccine technology developed over decades, pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Moderna made a windfall in profits. In 2005, researchers learned that RNA could have immense therapeutic potential.

StoryScape - The Story of the National Park Service
During the eclipse in 2017, my team worked with the Smithsonian on acoustic biomonitoring. In the middle, the prairie dogs started chattering and telling everybody, ‘Hey, there's a problem here.’ It was really fun. Dr. Sharolyn Anderson is a physical scientist with the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division at the U.S. National Park Service.

Sea Ice-Aurora Interactions Reduce El Ni<unk> o-Southern Oscillation
Climate models are already projecting a strengthened El Nio in the upcoming decades due to global warming. The amount of sea ice that survives the Arctic summer has declined 12.2% per decade since the late 1970s and projections show the region could experience its first ice-free summer by 2040. In 2019, Dai led a study examining the causes of Arctic Amplification.

Total Solar Eclipse: Can I See It in the UK?
NASA's deputy chief Pam Melroy says it will give an 'entirely different" opportunity to study the interaction between the Earth, moon and sun. The corona is hundreds of times hotter than the sun's surface and reaches far out in space. Scientists will be hoping to get more data on this enigma, as well as answers to other questions.

Africa Needs Long Term Investment in Science and Technology to Adapt to Climate Change
Africa needs long term investment in scientific infrastructure and science careers to allow the continent to adapt to climate change and its effect on weather systems. In a paper published in Nature the researchers say African weather and seasonal forecasting is being held back by gaps in understanding of the science behind weather systems in the tropics. It’s essential that African scientists have the skills and the tools to provide their communities with locally designed climate solutions.
