GW230529 Detected by LIGO Livingston Detector
Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of spacetime that were first proposed by Albert Einstein. The detection of GW230529 challenges previous assumptions about the frequency of such collisions, suggesting they may be more common than previously thought. A neutron star is one of the possible end products of a star as it reaches its end of life.

Watching a Total Solar Eclipse
A total solar eclipse happens somewhere on Earth about every 18 months. This is why Austinites’ opportunity to watch Monday’s eclipse from their own backyard is so rare and valuable. Total solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking the sun and casting a shadow over a narrow strip of land called the path of totality. The orbits of the moon around the Earth, and the Earth around the sun are elliptical.

A New Reconstruction of the Skeleton of a Fish
A new reconstruction of the skeleton of Tiktaalik shows that the fish's ribs likely attached to its pelvis. This innovation is thought to be crucial to supporting the body and for the eventual evolution of walking. In fish, the pelvic fins of the fish are evolutionarily related to hind limbs in tetrapods -; four-limbed vertebrates, including humans.

Theoretical Calculations Predict a Complex Excited State for Helium-4 (4He) at the 20.21 MeV Energy Level
In early 2023, scientists published a new measurement testing the strong nuclear force that binds protons and neutrons. The experiment involved the way the nucleus of a helium atom gains energy to become excited. This new result closes the apparent gap between theory and experiment.

We're Not Just Drinking Microplastics - We're Also Inhaling Them
Microplastics are an alarming topic. Researchers estimate there are 170 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean, most of them tiny fragments that end up in drinking water, raindrops, and inside human bodies. In 2019, a study found that people are inhaling an average of 16.2 bits of microplastics per hour. This form of pollution has been spreading for decades.
