Chilean Science Minister Visits ESO Headquarters
Aisén Etcheverry, the Chilean Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation visited the ESO Headquarters in Garching bei München, Germany. The visit, the first of a Chilean science minister to ESO’s facilities in Germany, provided an opportunity to further strengthen ties between ESO and Chile.

Is It a Myth That Sugar Causes Hyperactivity?
The idea that kids get hyper from sugar is something that is never really questioned, it’s just an understanding most parents have. According to the NHS, children aged 7 to 10 should have no more than 24g of free sugars a day. Children under the age of 4 should avoid sugar-sweetened drinks and food with sugar added to it. However, this isn’t to do with ‘being hyper’.

Taipower's "Dispersion" Plan to Fortify Taiwan's Power Grid
Taipower Vice President Tsai Chih-meng said the company began implementing projects to strengthen the power supply to science parks in 2022. A 10-year plan costing more than NT$560 billion (US$17.2 billion) has been proposed for grid resilience reinforcement. Taipower will compartmentalize the power generated from five different plants and then directly supply it to respective science and industrial parks.

How to Reprogramme a Cilia
Magnetic cilia are small artificial hair-like structures whose movement is controlled by tiny magnetic particles embedded inside of them. They are a popular material, frequently being used in soft robotics, droplet and particle control systems, sensors and microfluidics applications. NC State researchers have developed a new technique for making magnetic cilian that are reprogrammable, allowing them to be repurposed for new functions or uses.

What If the Color Purple Wasn't Green?
Green is the fundamental color of life on Earth, after all. But what if life on faraway planets wasn’t green at all? In fact, what would be purple? The researchers collected and grew samples of purple bacteria. The idea is to add to the database of possible signatures of life that future astronomers can look for on other planets.

NCEMS at Penn State
NCEMS will support 36 working groups across the country each consisting of six to 10 scientists in its first five years. The center will enable research that uses existing, publicly available data to glean new insights about how complex biological systems emerge from simpler molecules. Findings from the research could eventually inform the development of disease treatments and other applications such as minimizing the negative effects of aging.

The “Advancing Global Biosecurity Governance through the Promotion of the Tianjin Biosecurity Guidelines” project stands as a joint initiative within the IAP Biosecurity Working Group From 7-10 May 2024. The GYA’s 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and International Conference of Young Scientists will feature an InterAcademy Partnership-funded project on biosecurity. IAP Coordinator Peter McGrath played a key role in drafting and editing elements of the text.
