Curiosity Weekends
Curiosity is making good progress on the way to "Bloodstone Hill" The plan is to drive around the large sand patch and then make our way up to the hill, hopefully sometime next weekend. Weekends provide the opportunity to do full contact science, including use of the DRT, MAHLI, and APXS.

Exploring Gale Crater - Exploring the New "Glasgow" Drill
Some of the rock taken from inside the drill hole will be fed to the rover’s CheMin instrument on sol 2758. The X-ray diffraction patterns that CheMin acquires will tell us what minerals are present in the rock. That important data, in combination with Curiosity’s other instrument investigations, will help us untangle the complex history of how this outcrop formed.

Curiosity's 26th Drillhole on Mars
ChemCam will be observing two targets on nodular bedrock, “Polwarth” and “Rob Roy Way”. A number of Mastcam images and mosaics are planned, including a large mosaic of a trough feature that continues the coverage from a mosaic in the previous plan.

Curiosity - Navcam to Take Engineering Camera Images
Navcam will acquire some images over one the communication passes in the plan. The ability to use the engineering cameras over a pass means Curiosity can execute two activities - communicating and taking engineering images - in parallel rather than in series. This would leave more time and power for science observations or driving.

Navcam and Mastcam Science Blocks
To kick off the science block, Mastcam will take a 53-frame stereo mosaic pointed at the fractured intermediate unit to the southeast. Next, ChemCam will shoot its laser at the target “Bishop’s Palace” which exposes some nice small-scale layering and possible diagenetic features.

Curiosity's Mars Drill Campaign
despite the closest human geologist being over 186 million kilometers (115 million miles) away, our curious little robotic geologist has all the tools necessary to do a similar assessment on Mars. Since JPL decided to not send a good fashioned pencil and field notebook to Mars, we'll store our data in the onboard computer and then transmit it to Earth. That way those ever curious human geologists can "get their hands dirty'

Drilling and Remote Sensing Activities on Mars
The first sol of today’s two-sol plan is devoted to drilling. On the second sol, the drilling activities are accompanied by MAHLI and Mastcam documentation images. The second sol is packed with remote sensing activities.

Science Uplink Representative
I'm working second shift today; my tactical operations role is Science Uplink Representative. The early part of the MSL mission, called the Characterization Activity Phase, has been planned and tested in detail. As long as the mission continues to proceed nominally, no changes to the sequences will be needed, and the uplink planning process will primarily involve modeling the planned activities.
