Mars Sample Return
Mars Sample Return is a joint project between NASA and the European Space Agency to collect samples of rock, soil, and atmospheric gases from Mars and bring them to Earth. Right now, NASA’s Perseverance rover is collecting samples in Jezero Crater, where a river once spilled into an ancient lake. Getting the samples back to Earth will require two additional missions. A Mars lander will collect the samples and launch them into orbit, where another spacecraft will collect them and ship them back to

The Blind Spot: Why Science Cannot Ignore Human Experience
In my life, I dreamed of transcendence even if I didn’t know to call it by that name. I devoured telescopic images of interstellar clouds and star fields. In the mathematical proofs underpinning Newton’s gravity and Einstein’s relativity, I saw an invisible skeleton on which the flawed flesh of the world had been hung.

How to Rake Public Confidence in Science
Science is one of the most highly regarded institutions in America, with nearly three-quarters of the public expressing “a great deal” or “a fair amount” of confidence in scientists. However, confidence in science has nonetheless declined over the past few years, since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Climate Change - Is it a Health Crisis?
This is the sixth installment in “The Climate Report” collaborative series. I have criticized the New York Times for exaggerating the impacts of climate change, but this type of criticism may be in vain if they are covering climate exactly how their audience wants them to. The first article is titled: Surge in extreme forest fires fuels global emissions.

NASA M2M Architecture - How to Blend Science, Engineering and Human Spaceflight
In the moon to Mars (M2M) Architecture document, NASA clearly explains the purpose of these extraordinary efforts: to conduct world-class science, to establish a national posture that will affect humanity’s future. In my 50 year career, I’ve seen the space world from many different vantage points: National Lab, startup venture, consultant, center director of NASA Ames, peer-reviewed journal editor and adjunct professor at Stanford. The very first requirement was developing a common language to bridge the chasms among
