The Brain Isn't the Centre of Intellect
The ancient Egyptians thought the heart was in charge of intelligence and contained the soul, so mummified bodies were preserved with the heart intact, but the brain was removed and discarded. There’s no rule that says thought has to have a centre at all. Octopuses have about two-thirds of their neurons distributed among their tentacles. This means that each arm can react to stimuli and move in a semi-independent way.

The Milky Way's earliest building blocks - Identifying Shakti and Shiva
Astronomers have identified two ancient streams of stars - named after the Hindu deities Shakti and Shiva - that appear to be among the Milky Way's earliest building blocks. These structures may be relics of two distinct galaxies that merged 12-13 billion years ago. Each of the structures has a mass about 10 million times greater than our sun.

Bird Flu Kills Seals and Sea Lions
The worldwide bird flu outbreak that began in 2020 has led to the deaths of millions of domesticated birds and spread to wildlife all over the globe. The virus has been detected in seals on the east and west coasts of the U.S., leading to deaths of more than 300 seals in New England and a handful more in Puget Sound in Washington. Scientists are still researching how the seals have contracted bird flu, but it is most likely from contact with infected seabirds.

The technique involves analyzing grains of ice that scientists expect one of the instruments on Europa Clipper to pick up as it flies through plumes of frozen water rising up from Europa’s surface.
