Surrey Memorial Hospital to Get a New Acute Care Tower
The B.C. government announced Monday that a new acute care tower will be built at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The new tower will ensure “residents of Surrey get top quality maternity care and... top quality specialty care” The province explained that in the next 15 to 18 months, the project will enter the “business-planning” phase.

85% of childhood cancer survivors will grapple with serious or life-threatening effects. The risk of colorectal cancer is two to three times higher than for the general population. About 1,000 children get cancer every year in Canada, according to a 2021 study by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC)

Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) - Can Seniors Participate?
1.3 million seniors have been deemed eligible to receive oral health care services through the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) Since the launch of the CDCP last December, more people are applying every day as applications are now open to seniors aged 70 and above. The need is tremendous, as many of these eligible Canadian residents may not have had been able to see an oral health professional in past, due to cost.

NHKI-Brock University Summer Student Research Scholarship
NHKI has partnered with both educational institutions to co-fund two new scholarships, worth $10,000 each, to enable a Brock and Niagara College undergraduate student enrolled in a health-related program to participate in research-focused placements. Scholarship recipients will work alongside a researcher to contribute to an existing research project. They will assist with data collection, entry, validation and analysis, abstract writing, and presenting study findings or updates.

A new study from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) confirmed this – and then some. A total of 5,856 female participants aged 63 to 99 years were asked to wear an activity monitor on their hip for seven days at the start of the study. The researchers then followed them for a decade, during which 1,733 participants died.

Child Trauma Screen - New Research Shows the Value of Screening for Traumatic Stress in Child Welfare
Incorporating a trauma screening -; which assesses how trauma and maltreatment affected each child - provides information that could be used to connect children to the specific mental-health services they need. In 2014, Connecticut has included the Child Trauma Screen as part of evaluations for children placed in the child welfare system. This study demonstrated that asking a small number of questions about trauma during these evaluations led to better identification of trauma symptoms and more appropriate trauma-focused service recommendations for children.
