From April 2014 through December 2023, inpatient psychiatric capacity decreased statewide by 10.5%, or 990 beds, from 9,447 beds to 8,457 beds, the report said. Nearly 75% of the decline was driven by fewer beds in state hospitals. The decline comes during a time when there was a 23% increase in the number of New Yorkers served by the state's public mental health system.
