Shanna Shaffer developed double pneumonia, acute respiratory distress and severe sepsis. In December 2022, Shaffer and her husband, Tim, both caught the flu. The two ended up in the emergency room at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Doctors said her only chance for survival was ECMO.

Colorado Springs received only 2.74 inches of precipitation in August 2020, 0.61 inches below the usual. On Aug. 26 and 28, it stormed. The precipitation far exceeded the modest showers I had anticipated. In the years since, I have learned to better understand Colorado’s strange climate.

A new study was presented at the American College of Cardiology's Annual Scientific Session found that having anxiety or depression could accelerate the development of cardiovascular risk factors among young and middle-aged women. Anxiety and depression have also become more prevalent in recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers reported that younger women with anxiety were nearly twice as likely to develop high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes over a 10-year period.
